Every hour Reddit swallows tens of thousands of new posts. Almost all of them die in New. The ones that live share a timing signature: early votes and comments clustered in the first hour, not a slow drip over a week.
This is not folklore. Ranking leans on a Wilson-style score that punishes empty vote counts and rewards a high ratio of genuine upvotes while the post is still young. Velocity is how you get into the sample of posts the community even sees.
What the first 90 minutes actually do
When you submit, you land in New. A small slice of subscribers sorts that way. If they upvote and comment quickly, the post is more likely to enter Rising and then Hot. If they ignore it, the score stays near zero and the post is effectively unpublished.
Comments matter as much as votes. A thread with 12 thoughtful replies looks alive. A thread with 80 upvotes and zero comments looks purchased. Moderators notice. So do users.
The 90-minute launch protocol
If you use engagement services, they should drip, not dump. A wall of votes in four minutes is a signature. A climb that looks like a busy lunch hour is not.
Titles are ranking instruments
The algorithm does not "understand" cleverness, but people in New do. Lead with the outcome, the mistake, or the number. Cut adjectives. Put the community's words in the title — Talk Scan will show you which phrases they already use.
When not to chase Hot
Some posts should stay small: sensitive topics, thin evidence, or anything that would embarrass you on the front page. Velocity is a multiplier. It multiplies good judgment and bad judgment equally.
After Hot: keep the thread breathing
Front-page traffic arrives in waves. Continue answering for 24 hours. Pin useful replies by engaging with them. If Google later indexes the thread, those comments become extra keywords. Index Checker will not prove Google crawled you, but a lively, well-titled thread is still the best input you can give search.
